In 2004, an estimated 40 million Americans climbed atop a bicycle and went for a ride. In the same year, more than 18 million new bikes were sold in the U.S. Each year, hundreds of miles of bike paths open across the country, and some of the nation's premier trails can be found right in our own backyard.
All summer long, DUQ will be exploring biking opportunities in southwestern PA and beyond. Stories about the members of the region's biking community and the places they travel will be presented throughout the biking season. The highlight of the series will come in June, when reporter Mark Nootbaar undertakes a nearly 350 mile ride from Washington D.C. to Pittsburgh along the C & O Canal and the Great Allegheny Passage. He will be offering regular on-air updates from the trail, as well as web journal entries from June 18 - 24.
