Since July 2009, the radio audience in the Pittsburgh Market has been measured by the Arbitron Portable People Meter system. The contract under this new ratings method also allows public radio stations to be shown "in the book," measured against commercial stations in the metropolitan market for the first time.
As has been the case for many years, 'DUQ is the most listened to public radio station in Pittsburgh throughout the week. Among all stations, in March 2010, WDUQ ranks #13 in audience "share." In "Morning Drive," (6-10am, Monday-Friday), WDUQ ranks #8.
A Significant Audience
For March 2010, the total number of listeners tuned in, age 6 and over, is estimated at 180,500 listeners per week, Monday-Sunday, 6am-12m.
Total, or "cumulative" audience is referred to as "cume," Average Quarter Hour (AQH) audience is the number of listeners, on average, listening at any given time:
M-Su, 6a-12m, age 6+
Cume: 180,500
AQH: 5,800
The audience for NPR news and other news programs is significant during the weekdays.
Weekday News
M-F, 5a-9a + 3p-7p, age 6+
Cume: 133,000
AQH: 9,500
The audience for Jazz programming is also quite large.
Weekday Jazz
M-F, 9a-3p + 7p-12m, age 6+
Cume: 120,100
AQH: 4,200
If the two different main "streams" of programming on WDUQ were measured as a "news station" and a "jazz station," the stations would be the #1 and #2 public radio stations in Pittsburgh.
However, most WDUQ listeners listen to both news and jazz programming and listen to many other programs like Car Talk, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me and much, much more.
A Diverse Audience
WDUQ has much higher African American listenership than most stations that carry NPR's flagship news programs. WDUQ has the 3rd largest African American audience of any radio station in Pittsburgh.
M-Su, 6a-12m, Black Persons age 6+
